The Waltham Devil Dogs Pop Warner football program opened the season at Woburn on Sept. 12.
The Waltham Mitey-Mite (E Team) team lost to Woburn 28-18. Left halfback Janiah Marrero turned in a strong game. In the first quarter, she went off left tackle 40 yards for the opening touchdown. In the second quarter, Jim Falzone turned the right end, going 20 yards for the touchdown. Ken Rezendes closed out the scoring for Waltham, also in the second period, going right up the middle from 10 yards out for a touchdown. The offensive line of Dante Camilli, James Falzone, Michael DeGeouff and Christian Cabral played a strong game. The defense was led by Rezendes with five tackles. James Vanaria, Max Bonnano and Michael Scafidi also had strong games on defense.
The Junior Pee Wee (D Team) lost to a strong Woburn team 18-0. Although unable to score, Waltham moved the ball up and down the field most of the day. The offense was led by running backs Jonathan Charles, Frankie Meuse and Troy Saulnier. The offensive line of Eric Aucoin, Jonathan Coates and John Lembo blocked well all day. On defense, Liam Reynolds, Joe Lidano and Seth McCullough led the way with multiple tackles.
The Pee Wee (C Team) lost 20-6. Waltham moved the ball on its opening drive with a 20-yard pass from halfback Luke Cristofori to Joe Carroll. The ground attack was powered by the blocking of fullback Spencer Burton, ends Sean Saenpraseuth and Andrew Richard, tackles Nathan Aucoin and Johnathan Vass, guards Nicholas Fernandez and Mike Desimone and center Mike Thibodeau. The defense, led by nose guard Brendan Lydon, cornerback Nick Foti and middle linebacker Jordan Pantoja, kept the game scoreless until late in the second quarter when Woburn scored, set up by Waltham penalty. The field goal try was blocked by Lydon and Cristofori to keep the game at 6-0 going into halftime. Woburn scored twice in the third quarter to go up 21-0, but Waltham answered in the fourth when Lydon completed a pass to Cristofer Jean-Baptiste, advancing the ball to Woburn's 3. Fullback Spencer Burton went in from 3 yards out behind blocks from center Mike Kokovidis, guard Mike Thibodeau and tackle David Salazar. Also playing well for Waltham on offense were running back Sean Turpin and tackle Thomas Richard. Defensive standouts included end Charlie O'Donnell and cornerbacks John Rezendes and Antonio Gigenova.
The Jr. Midget (B Team) lost to Woburn 29-0. The offense was led by Sean Roche, Sean Kelly and Dana Parello. A strong defensive performance was turned in by Terrance Charles, Ryan Laufauce, Roy McDougall and Nick Menendez. Kelly ran for more than 80 yards in the game. Parello completed a couple of nice passes.
The Waltham Midget (A Team) beat Woburn 54-28. Waltham opened the scoring on the second play of the game when Sean Reynolds, from his nose tackle position, forced a fumble, which Dylan Lombardi picked up and ran 30 yards for the touchdown. Brodie Martin kicked the PAT. Also in the first quarter, Curtis Tirone went 75 yards on a counter play over right guard Erik Goguen. Martin kicked the PAT. Lombardi opened the scoring in the second quarter, going 15 yards right up the middle for the touchdown. Martin kicked the PAT. Also in the second quarter, Brodie Martin went 29 yards off left tackle, behind the block of J.T. Ford. Martin kicked the PAT. Jamie Lydon scored in the third quarter, turning the right end and running 70 yards behind the blocks of Lombardi and Trevor Martin. Brodie Martin kicked the PAT. Lydon opened the fourth quarter, scoring from 10 yards out right up the middle behind the blocking of Reynolds, Luke Letner and Ian Aucoin. Martin kicked all five PATs. The offensive line opened gaping holes all day long behind Robert Damigella, Chris Kokovidis, Philip Bucciero, Eric Autunes and Alex Beaton. Richie Scanlon led the defense with two sacks from his left end position and five unassisted tackles. Also turning in strong game on defense were Lombardi, Lombard, Trevor Martin, Justin Bibb, Andrew Carter and Kevin Shaughnessy.
